Macbeth

Naked Shakes presented us with their own unique interpretation of the Shakespearean play, Macbeth. I attended the Saturday showing of the play. The play itself was OK during certain scenes. For example; I really liked the way they actors used their bodies to create the set itself, like when they created the throne for the king, or like in the last act of the play, when Macbeth has been decapitated, and it looks like only his head is being held up. The dialogue was very hard to follow, since I’m not too fond of the Shakespearean language. Reading the plot summary that was handed to us before-hand helped me understand the story as it progressed; had I not read it, I don’t think I would have followed the plot of the play at all. Overall, I didn’t like the play all that much, mostly because I am not a fan of Shakespeare; however I would be interested in watching a different play from the Naked Shakes, and seeing how they perform in a non-Shakespearean play.

  1. I thought the decapitation of Macbeth was a very well done considering that they had no props. Even though it definitely wasn't a traditional take on the play Macbeth I thought it was well done. To me at least the play Macbeth is one of the hardest to follow anyways.

  2. I also enjoyed how the actors used their bodies to follow the movement of the drum. For example they would pretend they were running for a good distance. It kind of looked like they were moonwalking so that was cool. But the dialogue was hard to follow. I had never read the play Macbeth before and even during the play I found myself wondering what was going on sometimes. Overall I did like the decapitation part of the play as well. I hope you enjoyed your time at the play but I have realized that maybe this play is just not for me.

  3. I'm not too fond of Shakespeare's choice of words, but Naked Shakes' interpretation of Macbeth was truly interesting. I was really impressed by the way they form objects and backgrounds with their own bodies. Their portrayal of Macbeth's throne and his nightmare were really amazing.

    1. I understand where you are coming from... I couldn't understand the dialogue either. Shakespearean language is so archaic and difficult. I did enjoy the acting or else I would have been totally lost.
